  1. Dissolve NaHCO₃ in about 80 % of the final volume of purified water.
  2. Check the pH; it should read 8.3 at 25 °C. Adjust with dilute acid or base only if needed.
  3. Make up to the final volume with water.
  4. Filter-sterilise (0.22 µm) and store at 4 °C.
  • Target pH is more than 1 unit from pKa (6.35); buffer capacity will be low.
